When you're looking for a new home, you aren't just buying a property—you're buying into a community. One of the things that makes living in Prescott, Arizona, so incredibly special is our deep connection to Southwestern history, art, and culture.

If you want to truly understand the heart of our area, there is no better starting point than the Museum of Indigenous People (formerly known as the Smoki Museum). Located near our beautiful downtown at 147 N. Arizona Avenue, this local gem is a must-visit for long-time residents and newcomers alike.

Here is a look at why this museum is such a vital and fascinating part of the Prescott community.

A Historic Space with a Renewed Vision

You can't miss the museum's striking stone and log architecture. Constructed in 1935 with the help of depression-era work programs, the building itself is a beautiful piece of local history and sits proudly on the National Register of Historic Places.

For decades, the facility operated as the Smoki Museum, founded by a local, non-Native community group. However, in February 2020, the museum took an important and respectful step forward. It officially rebranded as the Museum of Indigenous People (MIP) to ensure that the narrative, culture, and art of the Southwest's Native peoples are told through authentic Indigenous voices.

Today, the MIP is the only museum in the greater Prescott area exclusively devoted to Native American art and culture, standing by its powerful mission: "To instill understanding and respect for the indigenous cultures of the southwest."

What You’ll Discover Inside

Whether you are a history buff, an art lover, or looking for an educational weekend outing with the family, the MIP holds incredible treasures. The museum houses over 2,000 artifacts spanning from the Pre-Columbian era to the modern day.

When you visit, you can expect to see:

  • World-Class Basketry: The museum is home to a basket collection widely considered to be among the finest in the United States.

  • Stunning Pottery & Beadwork: Discover vibrant, historical examples of craftsmanship that highlight the techniques and natural pigments derived straight from the Southwestern landscape.

  • Kachina Carvings: Intricate figures that hold deep spiritual and historical significance for regional tribes.

  • Rotating Contemporary Exhibits: The museum doesn't just look to the past; it actively celebrates living Native artists, modern Indigenous innovations, and contemporary storytelling.

Why It Matters for Your Prescott Lifestyle

A thriving local culture is a massive indicator of a healthy, welcoming real estate market. The Museum of Indigenous People isn't just a quiet building with artifacts; it is an active community hub. They frequently host visiting speakers, artist demonstrations, youth art workshops, and highly anticipated local events like their annual Navajo Rug and Indian Art Auction.

Having access to this level of authentic, cultural education right in your backyard enriches the experience of living in Prescott. It offers a wonderful way to connect with your neighbors, educate your children, and gain a profound appreciation for the beautiful land you call home.
